Play MP3's without a FM Modulator |
Although not my idea, I thought some of you could use this
info! I was searching for a solution that did NOT include one of those
crappy FM modulators and connected to the stock TJ head unit via its CD
changer plug. This USA Spec Aux Interface from Crutchfield
worked really well. It not only works, but sounds bad ass! I couldn't
detect any hiss or distortion whatsoever.
The installation was easy and it was as clean as my feable mind could devise and took about 1.5 hours including drilling and cleanup. The interface itself has 2 sets of normal RCA jacks. So you can connect just about anything to it using a stereo mini x RCA adapter. Not shown is the CDL-CXi cable (included with the Interface unit) which runs up through the bottom of the glove box and connects to the back of the Interface. The cable connects to the CD changer port in the back of the stock TJ stereo. Here is the interfacing unit... ![]() This is what I did with the excess wire (stuffed under the center stack way back there. There's a lot of extra cable, so it is wedged in there pretty good and is out of the way of the heater vent (I tucked in the wire after taking the pic). I used a couple of zip ties to keep it all together... ![]() Stereo mini x RCA adapter
wire running out of glove box up to my MP3 player. Access to the MP3
player is controlled with the MODE button on the head unit. It will
display CD 6 Track 1 for RCA input set 1 or CD 6 Track 2 for RCA input
set 2. You can switch between input 1 and input 2 using the SEEK button
on the head unit. So you can actually have 2 devices plugged in at a
time and switch between them.
